I was also recently taken on by James Cooper! It was a whirlwind interview lasting only 10 mins, no CV required, no proof of ID required or any experience in sales! It only took me 3 days to work out that something wasn't quite right! My 1st day, training was to sit and listen and take notes up until lunchtime then after lunch i was thrown into the deep end making calls to unsuspecting people offering them space filler rates on what was nothing more then a lie!! I didnt fill out any contracts of employment, no official paperwork was handed to me, not even a job description! Day 2 was simply straight on the phone as i did yesterday afternoon, but this time, the amount of people who shouted at me down the phone, telling me to stop calling them repeatedly or they had no idea who we were! The office i worked in was quite simply nothing like anything i'd worked in before. It comprised of a few desks, 2 computers of which i was not allowed to work from and a couple of old telephones. My desk only had a phone, a few sheets of paper, a pen and a hand ful of newspaper clippings of which i worked from! No database to log who i had called and what they're reaction was! now day 3, when i asked about pay day, i wasn't given a straight answer, when i also questioned about holiday entitelment, they seemed slightly puzzled and then i asked for their PAYE ref number to claim for tax credits this was an almost impossible task! I then went online to find all this info about them and to my utter shock my suspitions were right! I have not been paid for those three days and i very much doubt i will, i also lost money thru travelling on the train to and from work and the extra childcare i had to pay for! Very self absorbed employers out to get what they can. Be warned!!!

I was just recentley employed by this company, under the new name South Eastern Observer. Today i walked out of the job now knowing what they get up to.. When i was being trained on my first day (been only there for 4 five days now). i was trained on what to say by James Cooper, i was told to tell people that we were doing a feature i.e. Home improvment (for builders or other business dealing in this matter) Wedding feature for 2010 (for hairdressers and florisits aswell), and that a local buisness has just droped out and we need to get this space (late space) filled up before we go to print, i was told that if i am selling a £75 5cm space by 2 collums i would have to tell the customer that the previous client paid £612 or what other number i could make up, and we will sell it to you for £75 to cover ink and distrubution costs, and it would run for a week from tomorrow.. even tho this is a weekley paper we are told to sell as if it goes out the next day.

I was working also along side a Miss Charlotte Day and today on my fith day of being there i found out that this is a con.. i will tell you why..

A man phoned up and i answered, he wanted to speak to a frank sumat, and i had never met him, i am not even sure he works for us, charlotte Day took the phone from me and answerd, he wanted to talk about why his advert had not apeard in the nexts days edition and why he could not find it.. miss day then said hold on sir i will check the book.. (hint: there is no book) she sat there with her hand over the phones mic and then waited 2 mins, then went back on the phone and said its actually apearing in the tuesdays next week edition.. thats when i thought its best if i leave.. IF YOU GET A PHONECALL FROM MISS CHARLOTTE DAY, JAMES COOPER, DOMINIC OR A JAY... FROM A PAPER CALLED THE SOUTH EASTERN OBSERVER.. DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY DEATAILS...

thankgod i was not very good and never got a sale and never rippped any poor bugger off... THIS IS A BIG CON!!!!

if these people have called me once in the past 2 months then they've called me a hundred times, always a different person promising the same things and most of them are rude when I say no.

 mary23 at 17th Dec 2009, 07:37AM
I have been contacted by the south eastern observer about a douzen times a month, and on each occassion I ask to be removed from their listings and never contacted again. However, this seems to fall on deaf ears. Each time I speak to a different person. The turnover of staff is incredible. But the same unprofessional, rude attitude remains constant. This company wont take no for an answer.Next time I will be reporting them.In the very begionning I asked for a copy of the paper . But never got one. I looked on the website, which quite frankly leaves alot to be desired I felt. I have had the phone put down on me 6 times and sworn at once. I dont know how they are still in business.I have complained at the treatment I received. But they just dont want to know. I did not even get an apology. I have been in business for ten years and advertise frequently.I have never encountered these problems with any other company I deal with. I would never ever advertise with this paper. If in fact it actually does exist. As no one has ever seen a copy.

I have been in business for the last fifteen years. I was completely staggered at the ineptitude, unprofessionalism and rudeness of a sales person called Domonic.Who kept on saying he was from The Observer. I said the national newspaper ? He said yes. I asked for a website.Domonic said it was broken. But dont worry the feature will be fantastic. I asked what feature. He didnt seam to know any of the facts. I think it must have been his first day on the job. As his knowledge was zero. He was very pushy and kept repeating himself. He then had the cheek to ask me for a credit card. I said he had no chance. Domonic then got very defensive. As a businessman I am not used to being spoken to in such a rude manor. I was really taken aback. I later find out that he is in fact from the south east observer. The whole call was full of lies. I asked him to take me off the mailing list. He then put the phone down on me. Unbelievable behaviour. I was very shocked indeed.

My company has been constantly contacted by South eastern Observer. Each time I tell them I am not interested and asked to be taken off their mailing list.Their staff are very rude and pushy. On three occassion the phone has been put down on me. The sales staff which leaves alot to be desired, come up with some unbelieveable stories about how they have a fantastic price and how I would be mad to miss it. I have asked to see a copy of the paper four times. I have never seen a copy of it. I went on their web site and contacted some of the companies advertising with then. All of the companies I spoke to had also never received a copy of the paper. I thought this was very strange. Also they had all been asked for money up front with very little information. I would never be happy advertising with a company after I had read the comments on this site. It is quite disturbing. In my opinion there is something not quite right about this company. I am very glad indeed I did not take an advertisment out with them.

I have just come across this webstie while trying to find the number for the SEO. As i had misplaced my diary.

I can not believe what has been said about this newspaper! I run a small business in Norwich an have used the SEO on many occasions in a Home and Garden feature they run. I have always had a good response from the publication.

The team there have always been great. An I will happliy use the again.

I would like to advise people who are thinking about using the SEO, that they are a great team. An I'm sure they will do there best for you.

Regards

Jack

A boy named Domonic Littlewood telephoned me from a newspaper called South eastern observer. He said he was doing a feature on horses. I did laugh. He didnt even have the correct termonology. He kept going on about how his girlfriend has horses, and talking utter rubbish. He offered me an unbelieveable rate for the space he was trying to sell.He quoted me all sorts of too good to be true prices. I thought it was very suspicious. He was very reluctant to give me a website .When I eventualy got it out of him.I was not impressed. Also what he had told me was a complete pack of lies. My company is no where near where he claimed the paper is distributed. I have been contacted by many sales people in my 20 years in business. But Domonic was by far the most insincere, unbelievable and certainly unknowledgeable person I have spoken to.There simply were no facts to back up what he was saying. All through the conversation alarm bells were ringing.I felt very ill at ease.I am so glad I did not go ahead with any advertisment as I did not believe a word he said.

I run a curtain and blind company in Bedford.I was telephoned out of the blue by someone called Charlotte Day.Saying she was doing a feature on homes and gardens, and wanted to use my advertisment she had seen. I thought oh good a free ad. But no, she wanted payment for something called late space.Charlotte wouldnt let me get a word in edgeways and kept saying odd things like. Im not stupid,I cant sell this space at short notice. She also kept laughing.I thought maybe there was something wrong with her.I beat her down on the price 3 times . So I thought I had nothing to loose.I was wrong. She said the newspaper produces 50,000 daily.I have found out that this is not true.It is also a weekly paper. Not daily. So there is only one advertisment. She gave me a website of mediatodayonline.co.uk south eastern observer is not even on there. I would say Charlotte Day should get her facts right before contacting busy people like myself. Two months on I am still waiting for a copy of the paper. When I spoke to her chasing my copy . She tryed to put me off by saying my copy had definately gone out and she didnt understand why I havent got it.She kept on repeating herself and sounded very nervous.I am not happy the fact I have payed for something I have never seen and repeated asked for a copy. Which I feel will never materialise.

I feel very frustrated and angry at the fact I was contacted by a telesales person named Charlotte Day. She said she was from The Observer newspaper. At no time did she mention she was in actual fact from the south east observer. She spun a story about a client of hers not being able to get their art work to them on time.It was a very cheap space. So I thought I would give it a go, as it was The Observer newspaper.A credit card payment was secured which I wasnt entirely happy with.I asked if we could be invoiced and she said no. I never received a copy of the paper.Which I feel is terrible. The payment from my credit card came off within 2 days of Charlotte Day phoning me. She told me it would be a week to 10 days. Then to my horror. I got a bill for the same amount that had come off my credit card. Also it sais south east observer. Not, The Observer. I was clearly miss sold and lied to about the title of the publication. How an earth can this company ring businesses up and say these things to them. This is the first and hopefully the last time anything like this has ever happened. I dont know how a company of this nature remains in business it is beyond me. I am still waiting for a refund .I have tried to contact the company. But they just dont want to know.

My conpany is Amina Technologies in Huntingdon In Cambridshire. I was contacted by a very incompetant, loud sales girl named Charlotte Day. I was not impressed by her telephone manner and dubious sales pitch. She said she was doing some sort of feature, mentioned late space. Then proceeded in a garbled way to attempt to sell me advertising space at a very low rate. Which I thought was a little strange. She was quite pushy. Kept repeating herself and laughining. Which I found very off putting. However after some consideration. As we do alot of advertising. I decided, against my better judgement to place an advertisment. The worse mistake I ever made. Charlotte Day. If indeed that is her real name.Could not get me off the phone fast enough !.We never recieved a copy of the paper. I rang several times was put off on each occasion. Ms Day was always in a meeting.Oh how convenient I thought. There was no after service what so ever. My advise to you. Is steer clear of this paper. If a Charlotte Day rings you for advertising.Put the phone down.

 david204 at 12th Nov 2009, 05:16PM
I am a legitimate small publisher. I had a call today from Charlotte Day on 01225 464954 wanting copies of my publications as she was supposedly relocating her 'events company' called South East Events to the South East. Silly girl, you never even asked for my rates. I spotted the deceit a mile off. I dare say you'd be trying to get money out of my customers....... forget it.

I network with other 100s of other publishers and have passed your details on as you requested....

A complete con I have been called by these people on a regular basis. They claim to have advertised for me (although I have never had one call to suggest a potential customer has seen my ad in their paper) I advertise with local papers and generate a good response! I would advise everyone to stay away. On another note Trading standards are aware and have received complaints about this company

 JC23 at 23rd Sep 2009, 06:59PM
This is the same company that was based in Cardiff in Cathedreal Road !.They have just changed their name.I am at a loss as how they still manage to con people. I was contacted by this company. I am lucky i didnt advertise with them,as I didnt trust what the sales person said. They said they were on deadline they had a very cheap ad they needed to fill. Like £800.00 off the bill which I thought was very suspisious. Everything they said was a bit strange. they kept on saying if you give me your credit card details today I could have it even cheaper. That made alarm bells ring !.it was a real hard sell. I spoke to a guy called james who kept on saying its a bargin you dont want to miss out I would be mad to miss it. He was just like a market trader only over the phone.he was quite rude and abrupt. When I said I wasnt interested. He said dont you want your company to get any business and put the phone down. This is not good business practice. I have never been spoken to by a telesales person like that before, and what made me laugh. He said he was the editor. I thought this must be some sort of joke. My company had several calls a month from them, despite me saying I wasnt interested. I would steer clear of this company. Very suspect !

 david204 at 2nd Jun 2009, 06:22PM
I cant believe this company is still trading ! Unbeleiveable ! They are the biggest con merchants on the planet. The staff are so very rude. They tell massive lies to get your money.you never speak to the same person twice to when you ring to complain. Then they hang up on you. My advert was never printed in the paper but money was still taken from my account. I have tried for 5 months to reclaim the money. They just dont want to know. I am goint to report them to watchdog. This company should be investigated and closed down.

 candyfloss at 28th May 2009, 05:55PM
