Elite Dry Cleaners lost my ball gown seven months ago and have failed to make any offers for compensation. I am truly appalled at the unprofessionalism they have shown when dealing with my complaint.
I would like to highlight several problems with the service I received (and unfortunately, am still receiving):
- Denial and Delay. For the first two months of my complaint they denied the problem and sent me away for two weeks each time to 'look for' the missing dress. I was never contacted by them, and each time I contacted them they were entirely dismissive of my query. It seemed that they were hoping that I would forget and not bother them again, but the dress cost £160 and I will not give up.
- Appalling Practices. When I went in again they informed me of their very worrying practices of handing out garments to people without a receipt. It seemed that they would give any item to any person who walked in. I quote: "Sometimes a boyfriend will come in to pick up a dress for his girlfriend without a receipt and will say 'That one' and we give it to him." This is appalling behaviour by an established company, and no wonder my dress has been given to the wrong person!
- Huge Delay. When communicating with them about my complaint I again had to wait at least four weeks for a reply and the reply did not contain any information about the action they would take – only that I need to wait another two weeks. This has now turned into eight. Their reluctance to take my complaint seriously is making this process extremely long. It has now been SEVEN months since I complained and they have not done anything about it, despite my communication with Consumer Direct to open up a formal complaint.
- Others With Same Problem. Several of the times I went into the shop to ask what their compensation procedures were, I had to wait to let someone else finish their complaint or to hear the owner say that he cannot find the item for the customer.
Overall the way this company is run is horrifying, the staff are unpleasant and they avoid taking responsibility for any problems – no wonder so many people have complained!
I want to urge anyone who has suffered similar problems to seek free legal advice from Consumer Direct http://www.consumerdirect.gov.uk/ and not to give up. It is a shame that they are the only dry cleaners in the centre of Oxford because they have a monopoly, especially of students, and they are abusing this with their downright atrocious service.
