Good advice is hard to come by so I feel it is my duty to share a particularly nice experience I had the other day! I've been considering setting up my own online shop for a while so have been researching good eCommerce providers in Dorset and a few web agencies came up with some pretty reasonable prices. Being a complete novice in online selling, I thought it would be a good idea to speak to them rather than just picking the first one (you'd be surprised at how many people just pick the top result on the first page of Google because they presume it must be the best to appear at the top! If any of those people are reading this, that is not the case and you should dig a little deeper) To start with, so many web agencies require you to complete an enquiry form so they can call you. There is no phone number. This in itself is an immediate turn off for me as a consumer - if I want to speak to someone I don't want to fill in a form and wait for a few days to see if someone does or doesn't call me back, by which time I'm usually in the middle of doing something else and not thinking about the reason I contacted them in the first place.
So that slimmed down my list! I started calling a few of the rest, getting through to sales representatives all way too keen to tell me the positives about their company, rather than finding out about my business and objectives. Frustrating to say the least, especially as I have worked in sales before so can see through all the tricks!
But when I rang OnTop Media (yes, rang, as they put all their office numbers on their website including a free phone! Immediate brownie points!), I spoke with one of their Project Managers. Now, I'm not the most technically minded person, so I was a bit worried that they would reale off loads of techno jargon that went straight over my head, but I was pleasantly surprised.
Not only did they take time to help me understand the basics about eCommerce without going on a massive sales pitch, they also asked loads of questions about what I wanted to get out of the site THEN recommended parts of their products that could help me to do this. They gave me loads of good advice and didn't make me feel like I was wasting their time. Yes, I hear you say, "that’s just customer service, of course they would do that", but there's no of course about it because I ended that phone call (the 7th of 8 phone calls that day) feeling like someone had taken time to help me understand what I needed to do - so although I agree it should just be standard, it isn't, so OnTop really stood out from the crowd for me! I strongly recommend them to anyone who is starting out with an online business and needs support.
