Phoning around to get a realistic quote for a gearbox replacement for a mk3 golf i thought halfords would be reasonable as i have used them before. they came back with a quote of £1085 for the job (old one out new one in) not happy with this quote i phoned around some more and found southwest transmissions who quoted me £525 for the same job! shocked i said to the guy there how much halfords where quoting and he then told me that halfords use them for the job. thats a mark up of £560 just to drop my car off less than a mile round the corner..probably 10mins to drop off and pick up not using any of there mechanics or time. absolulty shocking. halfords have seriously gone down in my estimates
