On 18 Dec 2008, we took delivery of an Indesit WIXE127 washing machine. The first time we used it, it refused to empty the water out. Eventually, we manually emptied it. The result? Much water on the kitchen floor and wet clothes. So much for Indesit's quality control procedures.
We contacted Curry's, from whom the machine was purchased. We selected,as a replacement, a Hotpoint WML520P not realising that Hotpoint & Indesit are one and the same company (stupid boy).
The replacement machine was delivered on 28 December 2008.
Over the life-time of the product (all 23 months of it), we noticed that the clothes were becoming less dry and less clean following a wash. We also noticed that, on occasions, there was a pool of water on the floor in front of the machine following a wash. However, we were never able to determine its source. Eventually, after sitting and watching a complete wash-cycle, we found that the machine's drawer leaked.
On 29 November, the machine finally stopped working and we called out an independent engineer. He checked the machine out and told us that he thought that there was a fault on the main control board and suggested that we contact Hotpoint, which we did. Note that he did not charge us for any of his time.
This morning, the Hotpoint engineer arrived and fixed the problems. It took him 9 minutes and cost £104. Given that all parts are guaranteed for 5 years and that the machine is less than two years old, the £104 must, by definition, represent the labour cost. If my maths is correct, Hotpoint's labour costs are £693.33 per hour!!
I spoke to the engineer. He had some interesting comments to make:
1. The leaking drawer is a design fault.
2. Hotpoint are the worst company that he has ever worked for.
My comments are:
1. I expect a washing machine to last for more than 23 months before breaking down.
2. For water to leak through a drawer because of a design fault indicates poor quality control and testing procedures.
3. Labour costs of £693.33 per hour are excessive.
4. For an employee to comment that Hotpoint is the worst company that he has ever worked for is, I feel, a sad indictment but speaks volumes.
Following my story earlier this year about my FrostFree Hotpoint freezer, I did go back to the retailer, Curry's, quoting the Saqle of Goods act, and they told me that they would indeed replace the freezer PROVIDED I paid myself for an independant report from an engineer stating that it was unfit for purpose.
I could see another 50 quid or so going down the tubes, so have done nothing further. I have now bought a replacement freezer, highly recommended by a local supplier (not one of the big chains). It seems excellent, has better insulation and is obviously a more soundly constructed product that the Hotpoint, and cost £100 less than I paid for the Hotpoint.
To reiterate what I said previously, Hotpoint/Indesit are an appalling company and I will do all I can to ensure that no one I know ever, ever buys one of their products again.
They deserve to go out of business and the sooner the better.
Indesit is THE WORST company out there! DO NOT BUY A THING FROM HOTPOINT or Indesit. I bought a washing machine and did one wash and never again did it work! Went in to see the place M.J. Carrolls in Listowel, Co Kerry, Ireland to report it. They would send out a guy to repair it. The company called said there would be a man out that Friday and NO ONE CAME! Went back in. Company called and said a man would call and would be out the following Friday AGAIN! Man phoned at 10PM the night before 3 times.Once to say he was coming. Next call to ask what the problems was. The 3rd call was to ask me to put on a load before I go to bed. I told him I would try but it had not been working. Long story made short. The guys threatened me when he came saying it was not installed correctly. We needed to move it. Where? I live in a small cottage not much room. When I called the company there was a very nice lady on the other end saying the company would fix my machine not to worry and the first repair man would never come to my home again. I would have pressed charges if he would come back on to my property again. Thats how bad this guy was.Still NO machine. Nice lady does not exist says the company.( poor thing don't know what they did to her!) Company now says their repair mans boss says he couldn't believe he would do something like that so HE DIDN'T and my machine is still not fixed. Writing even more letters to company and now see no other way but to go to court and to let the world know what a piece of works this company really is. WARNING VERY BAD COMPANY!!!!
Try going through the retailer you purchased it from. Write to their head office detailing every little thing including the lack of care or concern from hotpoint and state that you wish to claim a free repair or a contribution towards another appliance as the product is only 14 months old and it is not unreasonable to expect a freezer to last 6 years. Use the sales of goods act as I think it is well in your favour in this case.......it may take a little bit longer than just buying another one but it could save you some money.
In January 2008 I purchased a Hotpoint frost-free freezer, model FZA34. 14 months later it stopped working and I lost £100 of food and now have no working freezer. Because I did not take out the extended warranty Hotpoint want £99 just for coming to my house. No local repairer will touch freezers. I have written twice to Hotpoint, stating how appalled I am at the quality and endurance of their product and asking that it be repaired at their expense. So far they have climbed down to the extent that they say they will do it for a total cost of £75, which they have the cheek to call "nominal". I am not prepared to spend anything more on this item, as it may well break down again. I'd do better to go elsewhere and buy another new one. What a waste of £270, which was the initial cost. I thought I was buying something good. How I wish I had found this, and other discussion forums, before purchase. I shall do my best to ensure that no one I know ever buys any Hotpoint (or Indesit, they are the same co.) product ever again.
