This used to ber a good retailer, but...

They need to keep an eye on their stock levels!!!! Several times over the past couple of months I have ordered an item that has been advertised as "In Stock. Usually dispacted in..." They have been very prompt to take my money, and then.......nothing. The item gets stuck in some weird 'packing stage' loop, with no updates forthcoming. Upon chasing-up my order, I am told that there has either been a 'problem' with the order, or that it is no longer in stock.

So, I have the following questions:

1) Why are they advertising items that are not in stock?
2) Why do they take payment without even checking that the item is in stock first?
3) Why are items that are not in stock shown to be 'packing' for days on end?
4) Why don't they provide updates until the customer chases-up the item?
5) What on earth happened to this once great retailer?

I ordered a ps3 for my son for his birthday with play.com. After a week with no sign I contacted marke1 who was to distribute it. He was very helpful initially, very prompt email replies etc & it did eventually arrive. Plugged it in and the console blew. Emailed Mark who said I should return it to Game where he got it - surely it should have been returned to him? Anyway, he emailed me a copy of the receipt & I went to Game to be told the wrong lead had been used hence the fuse had blown. Mark said he had never touched it apart from to check it worked hence the box being opened on arrival. I rang play.com to ask why I couldn't return the item to them to be told I had to resolve it with the seller if possible. Several days later after several emails to Mark & phone calls again to play.com (who still said resolve it with Mark to start with) asking for a returns address etc I eventually got rid of the faulty item. Then had to wait again for a new one to be sent out. Mark agreed to send my son a free game as compensation which never arrived and again had to email him to remind him. The new console arrived which is fine this
time but the game Mark sent was FIFA World Cup 2010 in a well worn box. Rubbish service & will not use this company again. Mark has just emailed me to give feedback. Well here it is.

Wow you guys are pretty negative. I would say to anyone who is purchasing, ask your friends. Ok you may have 1 friend out of 50 that will say Play is rubbish. it appears here though people have gone well out of their way to make play look bad when in reality play are quite a good company. My son got Gears of War the other day the day it came out and we got free delievery cant say better than that really can you.

Play.com have suspended mine and my girlfriends accounts because the previous tenants committed several types of fraud (several with Play.com) we have only been at our new address for 6 weeks and this isn't a good start to our new home. Last friday (16/09/2011) my partner called them and they agreed to reinstate her account as they could see from her previous addresses that she has been an excellent customer. They reactivated her account after 2 hours (they told me something similar but it's still suspended) so we placed our order again (play had cancelled it)and everything seemed ok until today (19/09/2011) when we found out that they'd suspended her account again. i called them and that's when they told me that they would not be allowing us or anyone else at our address an account with them. The 'advisor' on the phone suggested that i open an account at a different address with a credit/debit card registered at that address. How do they think i can manage this? Go to Lloyds bank and ask them if they'd allow me to have 2 cards, one for each address. Hmmm i think they'd laugh if i asked that.

"You will accept the wrong item wether you want it or not"

I have used play.com several times over the last few years and apart from slow delivery i have had no problems. This time however they have turned a simple transaction into a nightmare. I viewed and ordered a standard version of a gaming mouse. when I received dispatch notice they were sending me a left handed version. I logged on to their site and my order history showed a left hand version also. I then checked my browser history and my computer was never on the left hand page there was a link for the standard version only. I followed their returns link and there was no option to discuss this apart from comment section on the wrong item ordered. 75 characters only so kept comment simple "i need a number to discuss this" I later found a number on site and called. Everything I said was totally ignored. I eventually resigned myself to the fact that I would pay return costs. I asked for the standard version to be sent out once they had received the return only to be told that i would have to wait until return and refund had been completed, then start fresh order. I ordered elsewhere due to the delay involved. When the returned item arrived they then sent me an E-mail stating replacement was going to be dispatched within 24 hours. I called them to say I no longer required item and seeing as they said this wouldnt be happening why has it. Their response after an hour on phone was tough oh and by the way you're getting the left handed version again and you will have to pay yet again to return this (£7 with tracking. thats £14 so far for an item I didnt order!) No they couldnt possibly stop this wrong item being dispatched. Their system doesnt allow it. It didnt get dispatched until the following day . I have bought products online for over 10 years now and I have never come across such utterly poor customer service. I have a strong suspicion that I am never going to get my refund of them. Do not touch with a barge pole it really is a lottery but if you do get a problem forget any chance of reasoning with this company

absolutely shocking comapany. i ordered a 6 bin storage unit for my daughter. 7 days later it is delivered. a tiny box with nothing in it but packaging. i contacted their call centre ( which was just as shocking) they dismissed me completely and told me to write them an email. i did so adding in photos of the empty box and stressing how unhappy i was. this was also dismissed with "it wasnt their mistake" !!!!! 2 months on im still forty five pounds down and have no storage unit ... DISGUSTING SERVICE AND ?NEVER AGAIN WILL I ORDER FROM THEM

I just want to make people aware that this company (play.com) are not to be trusted. i recently pre-ordered an "exclusive signed" copy of the new jls outta this world. i placed my order on 17/10/2010 . the c.d. arrived but it was not signed by the jls members . This was a present i promised my daughter and she was full of excitement anticipating the arrival of this "exclusive " item only to be let down by play.com.sending an unsigned copy. i contacted them to ask why the album was sent un-signed and why was i not informed prior to them dispatching the item, that it would be unsigned. they replied to my e.mail with a return ref. number for me to return the c.d. at my own expense. i then telephoned them to explain why i was sent the unsigned c.d. They of course were full of applogies and told me they were unable to supply a signed copy. they offered me 20% discount but this was not the point. i ordered the "exclusive signed" copy in good faith and in plenty of time but was let down by "play.com". and made to look foolish to my daughter . be warned and tell your friends !!! steve, south wales.

Will have to agree with the majority , Play.com don't give a stuff about their customers.Jersey based ,so can't be touched. Customer service is one big joke as they know there's nothing you can do. My husband has spoken to 3 different people who woodenly repeat that nothing can be done and that's it.
Shameful company ,can't rate it low enough.

Play.com is a very good online shop. Its true that they don't carry anywhere near as much stock as Amazon.co.uk, but in my personal experience, play.com's service is much better.
For one thing, play.com has zero postage options. All the postage costs are factored into the price. So the price you see is the price you pay, and if you do a quick comparison, you'll see that play.com is MUCH CHEAPER on most new items. ...in the last 2 years, i've ordered many items from play.com, and play.com traders. I've never had a single problem with anything. Items i've ordered include the following... Many dvd's and dvd box sets, posters, t-shirts, shoes, a ps3 console, ds games, and a novelty key-ring. On one occasion, a ds game arrived late, but that was due to postal strikes. .....in short, you can order with confidence at play.com. 99percent of all problems arise from people not reading the small print/product details properly. Play.com is a rising company, amazon has become complacent.

11 days in and I still haven't received my order. 11 days to have something sent from the UK to NL!!! Are they floating it across?? I had a similar problem with my last order which ended up nearly two months late. I said then I wouldn't use them again. Foolishly i thought things may have improved. They haven't. I can get packages from China in a fraction of the time. Awful company. Avoid!

Just like to warn any prospective Play.com customers of the terrible service I have recieved from them. Their console broke two of my sons games at Xmas bought from Amazon. They then suggested I ring Amazon and tell them that the games were faulty and get replacements as they didn't want to replace them. They are now not prepared to replace the faulty console at all and have suggested directing my enquiries to Microsoft. I have never in my life experienced such terrible customer service as I have now recieved. Please save yourself and your childs heartache and steer clear of these cowboys. They're happy to take your money but thats it!!!

Recently Play.com took my money for an item they knew to be out of stock. They were impossible to contact, and when I did speak to their call centre they told me outright lies.

Now here's the interesting thing...I spoke to the Office of Fair Trading and it turns out that Play.com are not subject to any consumer law whatsoever. Jersey is outside the European Union and therefore no consumer laws apply to Play. You don't even have a right to a refund.

My advice is to shop eslewhere, perhaps with copmanies based within the EU...and least you have some legal rights with them. Play.com? Avoid avoid avoid!

I have used Play.com several times over the last 4 years or so and have found them superbly efficient. I ordered dvd box set and received it within 1 week and with free postage. I think they are a great set up. I once had to return an item to them and there was no fuss, I returned it and money was credited back to my account straight away. With such a large company things are bound to go wrong some time but I would recommend them to anyone.

Awful, I called today as I had not received my sons Christmas present ordered on the 30/11/09. It was in stock when I ordered it.

They said it was out of stock and they had sent me an email, which I had not received surprise, surprise (I received 2 previous emails ok).

I expressed my dissapointment at not being told, bad customer service if you ask me, then was told I could reorder it, it was in stock but I would have to pay more for the item. It was with a different seller.

Complaints department not surprisingly were engaged.

Is it me or is this really bad and slightly dodgy practice. It's in stock until we put the price up and then you can't have it for that, pay more and you can.

The companies contract statement seems to give them freedom to exploit this. Where is the customer protection. So much for having all the Xmas presents covered.

i ordered a cinema surround sound system and it is excellent. 2 day delivery and a very reasonable price. a bit dubious about ordering something like this by mail but i have no complaints at all. came complete with all the necessary cables and connections and very clear instructions. fantastic. will shop here again for things other than dvds and cds.

I have used Play for many years and have always had good service. Delivery is usually around 3-4 days and pre-order items usually arrive on the day of release. I would highly recommend.

In late November 08 I placed a big order for Christmas consisting mostly of DVDs and computer accessories. My order went through on the website. Then 24 hours later I get an email saying the order is confirmed "awaiting payment confirmation". Three days later I get an email saying my payment was declined. I contacted my bank, who said the payment was fine and that they were waiting for Play.com to take the money!! I emailed play.com... No reply... I phoned play.com... I waited 38 minutes to get through (£3.80 in call charges) just to get through. They told me there was something amiss with my address... I checked what I had typed (I had a print out)... everything was perfect! They said that there was still a problem with the address. The address matched exactly that of the card, even the bank agreed!! What is their problem?!?!? I asked them to take the money again... They said we can't, you have to re-order! I did... Same thing happened, except this time I was on the ball and called them the next day. And guess what another problem with the address / card address... They asked for another card. I gave them one... They said it will take 45 minutes to process (funny how it's quicker than what it was before!!) they also told me I would get a confirmation email in 45 minutes..... I waited and waited and waited.... No email... I waited three hours... I phoned them again, 32 minute wait this time (another £3.20 of my hard earned money!!!!).... I cancelled the order and told them they weren't worth the script on a monitor... I re-ordered with Amazon.co.uk and saved £3 (although 1 item I had to buy at Waterstones... See my Amazon.co.uk Blagg (positive for Amazon

Seems I am going to repeat what a lot of people have already said. I've ordered shedloads of DVDs and CDs through Play.com and although they have a slightly longer lead time for delivery than other online retailers I have always had the goods inside a week. Two weeks ago, however, I ordered a mobile phone and although the money was duly taken from my account and I received an email confirming the order and a second email advising dispatch had taken place, I am still without said mobile phone. I am frustrated that Play.com insist one waits an almost unheard of three weeks before reporting the item missing so I have sent emails to about three Play.com emails addresses I was able to garner from online forms but all have gone entirely unanswered. As a consumer I am going to vote with my feet and simply not do business with Play.com again. A mistake is fine, and I don't expect them to offer a perfect service, but when you take £90 from someone's bank account the least you can do is reply to any one of their five emails when they advise you that their item has not arrived. The disdain with which Play.com is treating me has left a very foul taste in my mouth and I just won't use them any more. As to how I go about getting my money back, I suppose I will have to wait another week and then report it missing, and see if finally Play.com will take action.

 clhs at 21st Jan 2009, 11:17AM
Out of 6 items I've had delivered from Play.com one was 19 days late and two were not delivered at all.

After I'd reported the 2 items missing they sent me a missing item form to fill in, which I did, but then never heard anything more.

Their online "help" is laughable, no email contact details at all, only a "help"line number which never gets answered.

And of course there's nowhere on their site to leave feedback, because if there was no one would ever buy anything from them.

Absolute worst online shopping experience ever.
